A 27-year-old Muslim man, Mohd Salman, died after being brutally assaulted by villagers in Nawada village, Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on January 13. Videos of the harrowing incident have surfaced online, showing Salman tied upside down with his legs, as villagers mercilessly thrashed him with sticks.
The inhumane assault, which occurred on January 13, Monday night, ultimately led to his death in a Meerut hospital on January 18. Another unidentified man who was with Salman is also hospitalized with severe injuries.
According to Saharanpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Sagar Jain, a PCR call alerted authorities to an alleged robbery attempt at the house of Raj Kumar in Nawada village.
“The two men, reportedly armed, attempted to rob the house at gunpoint. Villagers caught and thrashed them while they were trying to flee after the family raised an alarm,” SP Jain stated.
In Salman’s case, while the police have registered a case against the alleged robbers, little has been said about holding the perpetrators of the mob violence accountable.
The villagers’ claims that the men were armed and intended to rob the house also remain unverified, and no weapons have been recovered so far, according to police sources.
Salman’s death is the latest in a growing number of cases where mobs have taken the law into their own hands, often targeting marginalized communities.
