Gangapuri Maharaj, popularly known as Chhotu Baba, has become a major attraction at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. The 57-year-old Baba, who stands at just 3 feet 8 inches tall, has not taken a bath in 32 years and has decided not to take part in the bathing rituals during this year’s Mahakumbh.
“I have a wish that remains unfulfilled for the last 32 years, and because of that, I don’t take a bath. I will not take a bath in the Ganga,” Chhotu Baba told news agency ANI. Despite this, he expressed his happiness at being part of the Mela, saying, “I am very happy to come here. You people are also here, I am happy in that also.”
Chhotu Baba, who comes from Kamakhya Peeth, sees the Mahakumbh as a “Milan Mela,” where souls come together. He said that his decision not to bathe is tied to his unfulfilled wish, and he will not be part of the famous bathing rituals, known as Shahi Snan, which are set to take place on key dates: January 14 (Makar Sankranti), January 29 (Mauni Amavasya), and February 3 (Basant Panchami).
The Mahakumbh, which is held once every 12 years, is expected to draw millions of devotees from January 13 to February 26. To ensure the safety of visitors, the local administration has made extensive preparations. These include increasing the number of personnel, adding quick response teams, and deploying fire-fighting robots and fire mist bikes. Fire-fighting boats will also be ready to handle any emergencies on the river.
The Prayagraj division of the North Central Railway has introduced a modern way for devotees to book train tickets. Railway personnel will wear green jackets with QR codes that visitors can scan to download the UTS mobile app, allowing them to book tickets easily without standing in long queues.
