A Dalit woman was assaulted in her own home by a local man who tried to rape her. When he failed, he urinated on her face, used casteist slurs, and threatened to kill her before fleeing the scene, in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh on June 10.

According to the woman, the accused — identified as Abhinav Verma, a resident of the same village — entered her home around 6 to 7 PM when she was alone. Her husband works in Surat, while her in-laws were away on the evening of the incident.

“He forced himself inside and started touching me inappropriately. When I resisted, he tried to shut my mouth and tear my clothes,” the woman said in her police complaint.

She said that when she tried to escape, Abhinav threatened to throw her two-month-old baby on the ground. In her attempt to protect the child, the woman was injured.

“When he couldn’t succeed in raping me, he got angry. He urinated on my face, insulted my caste, and said he would kill me if I told anyone,” she added.

The woman informed her in-laws when they returned later that evening and then went to the police station to file a complaint. She told the police she feared for her life.

Station House Officer Ankit Tripathi confirmed the incident, saying, “A case has been registered based on the victim’s statement. We are investigating and will take strict action against the accused.”

This brutal attack has raised serious questions about the safety of women, especially those from marginalized communities, in rural areas.

“This is not just violence against a woman, it’s an attack on her dignity and her caste,” said a local Dalit activist who demanded immediate arrest and strict punishment for the accused.
