A BTech student from Bihar, studying at the Central University of Jammu, has been arrested for allegedly acting as a key arms supplier to criminal gangs operating in Jammu and Samba districts, the Jammu and Kashmir Police said on Monday.

The accused, Kaif Ahmed, hailing from Siwan district, Bihar, was taken into custody as part of an investigation into a February 23 shootout that occurred during a wedding ceremony in Miran Sahib.

According to an Indian Express report, police allege that Ahmed was responsible for transporting illegal weapons from Bihar and selling them to local gangsters. He has been booked under Sections 109/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act.

Police sources said that Ahmed’s name surfaced during the interrogation of Balwinder Singh alias Goru Jatt, a key accused in the February shootout. Singh was arrested recently after being on the run since the incident. The other two accused in the shootout were arrested on the same day of the firing.

Officials said Ahmed’s arrest points to a wider network of interstate illegal arms smuggling and that further investigations are ongoing to uncover more links.
