Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has triggered fresh controversy with his remarks aimed at Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind president Maulana Mahmood Madani. Responding to the organisation’s reported demand for his removal, Sarma said, “If I get hold of Mahmood Madani, I will send him to Bangladesh.”

The statement has drawn sharp criticism from community leaders, who accused the Chief Minister of using divisive rhetoric to target Muslims and their representatives. They argued that such remarks from a constitutional authority undermine democratic values and reflect a growing hostility towards minorities in the state.

The Jamiat, one of India’s oldest Muslim organisations, has been outspoken against the government’s policies on citizenship, the NRC, and the treatment of minorities. Its demand for Sarma’s removal reportedly came in response to the Chief Minister’s controversial statements and policies seen as discriminatory.

Supporters of Sarma, however, defended his remarks, claiming they underline his “tough stance” against organisations they believe act against “national interests.”
