In Assam, 16 FIRs have been registered against social activist and former Planning Commission member Syeda Hameed. The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) confirmed the development, saying that complaints have been filed across 16 districts.
AJP spokesperson Jiyaur Rahman told media, “FIRs have been filed against Syeda Hameed in 16 districts of Assam. We have demanded her arrest for making anti-Assam and communal remarks. Our workers will continue to register cases against her in other police stations as well.”
The controversy began after Hameed made a statement during an event in Guwahati on August 24. Speaking about migration, she said, “If Bangladeshis live in Assam, then what is the problem?” Her remarks triggered strong reactions from regional groups, who accused her of insulting Assamese identity and trying to create communal discord.
The AJP has urged the police to act under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including section 195 (offences against public peace), 353 (statements intended to cause public mischief), and 356 (defamation), along with other applicable provisions.
