“Choose the Path of Peace”: PM Modi in Manipur

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday appealed to various groups in Manipur to shun violence and embrace peace, saying that his government stood firmly with them.

Speaking at a public meeting in Kuki-dominated Churachandpur district during his first visit to the state since ethnic clashes broke out in May 2023, Modi said, “It is unfortunate that violence happened here. Today, I want to promise you that the Government of India is with you and I am with you. I appeal to all groups and organisations to choose the path of peace.”

The Prime Minister said that peace was essential for development and said the Centre was committed to restoring normalcy. “Peace is paramount for development, and we are determined to make Manipur a symbol of peace and prosperity,” he added.

Modi reached Imphal in the afternoon before traveling by road to Churachandpur in heavy rain. At the Peace Ground, he met families displaced by the violence, listened to their concerns and assured them of the Centre’s continued support.

During his visit, the PM laid foundation stones for development projects worth ₹7,300 crore in Churachandpur. Later in the evening, he was scheduled to return to Imphal to inaugurate more projects worth over ₹1,200 crore.

Earlier in the day, Modi launched projects worth ₹9,000 crore in Mizoram. Heavy rains prevented him from reaching the rally venue at Aizawl’s Lammual Ground, so he addressed the gathering virtually.
