A 35-year-old Dalit man, Rudra Pratap Singh Jatav, was allegedly beaten to death by his neighbours in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district after a dispute turned violent on Saturday evening. The incident took place in a village under the Daboh police station, around 65 km from the district headquarters, police officials said.

According to Rajesh Sharma, the station house officer at Daboh police station, Jatav had an ongoing dispute with a neighbouring family. On Saturday, the quarrel escalated and five members of the Kaurav family allegedly attacked him with sticks. “An elderly man who tried to stop the fight was also injured,” Sharma said.

Jatav was first taken to a nearby hospital and later referred to Gwalior for better treatment, but he died on the way, police said.

News of his death triggered anger in the village. Relatives of the victim and other locals vandalised a house belonging to one of the accused and set it on fire along with a car and a motorcycle parked outside.

Bhind Superintendent of Police Asit Yadav and Deputy SP Sanjeev Pathak reached the spot with additional police forces to control the situation. Reinforcements were also called in from nearby areas to restore peace.

“A first information report has been registered against the accused Ranveer Kaurav, Ashu Kaurav, Prahlad Kaurav, Rajeev Kaurav and Kunwar Singh Kaurav under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,” SP Yadav said. “A search has been launched for them, and extra police have been deployed in the village to maintain law and order.”
