Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that five people have been arrested in connection with the recent Delhi blast for allegedly spreading “offensive and inflammatory” content online.

“In connection with the recent Delhi blast, Assam Police has arrested five individuals for spreading offensive and inflammatory content online,” Sarma wrote on X. “Assam Police will continue to act swiftly and firmly against anyone misusing social media to spread hatred or glorify terror,” he added.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Mattiur Rahman from Darrang, Hassan Ali Mondal from Goalpara, Abdul Latif from Chirang, Wajhul Kamal from Kamrup, and Nur Amin Ahmed from Bongaigaon.

Officials said that the arrests were made as part of a crackdown on people allegedly trying to incite hatred or glorify acts of terror through online posts following the Red Fort blast.

A day earlier, police in Assam’s Cachar district detained a retired school principal for allegedly making objectionable social media posts about the Delhi explosion in an attempt to “politicise” the incident.

The Delhi blast, which took place on Monday evening, occurred when a slow-moving car exploded near the Red Fort metro station, killing at least 12 people and leaving several others injured.
