Renowned spiritual leader and founder of the Art of Living Foundation, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, met Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq at his residence in Nigeen, Srinagar, where both leaders called for renewed efforts to promote peace, dialogue, and interfaith harmony in Kashmir.
In a statement issued by the Mirwaiz’s office, the meeting was described as cordial and centered around compassion, coexistence, and the dangers of radicalisation and social alienation. Both spiritual figures agreed that injustice and disempowerment often lead to unrest and that only continuous dialogue and mutual understanding can help societies heal and protect human dignity.
Welcoming Sri Sri Ravi Shankar to Kashmir after seven years, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said the institution of the Mirwaiz has always upheld peace and dialogue as humane and effective ways of resolving conflicts. He also appreciated Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s recent anti-drug campaign in the Valley, which brought together around 20,000 young people pledging to create a drug-free Kashmir.
Mirwaiz urged Sri Sri Ravi Shankar to support a compassionate approach toward political prisoners and detained youth ahead of his planned visit to Srinagar Central Jail. “Empathy and understanding must guide all efforts for their release and rehabilitation,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar addressed a large gathering at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC), where he spoke about Rishi Kashyap and Kashmir’s legacy as a cradle of diverse knowledge traditions. He also interacted with students during meditation and music sessions and discussed future initiatives for youth empowerment.
Expressing happiness at being back in the Valley, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said, “Kashmir’s spiritual and cultural heritage stands as a timeless symbol of coexistence and inner strength.”
