A case of alleged religious conversion and sexual exploitation has surfaced against Rameez Malik, a resident doctor at King George’s Medical University in Lucknow. Police in Uttar Pradesh have pasted an attachment notice at his ancestral house in Pilibhit as he continues to evade arrest. The police have also announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to his capture.
According to the police, Rameez Malik is accused of forcing a woman doctor from Agra to convert her religion and sexually exploiting her over a long period. It is alleged that the two were shown as married through nikah using forged documents. Investigators say the nikah was carried out on paper with the help of a local qazis and a witness from Pilibhit, even though the couple never travelled there.
On Wednesday evening, a team from Lucknow Police, with support from local police, pasted a property attachment notice at Malik’s ancestral residence in the Neuria area of Pilibhit. Police also conducted raids at several locations in Neuria and the Kotwali area of the city while searching for Malik and others linked to the case. Senior police officers said strong clues have emerged and arrests are likely soon.
Police investigations revealed that the alleged nikah documents were prepared using forged papers. The qazis and the witness involved in the paperwork are residents of the Feelkhanan locality in Pilibhit. Lucknow Police questioned local residents and gathered details about their role in the case.
Meanwhile, the Vishakha Committee at KGMU has said that it found Rameez Malik guilty of sexual harassment and attempts to force religious conversion. The committee completed its inquiry and submitted its final report to the Vice Chancellor after a meeting that lasted nearly four hours. Malik did not appear before the committee despite repeated notices.
Based on the committee’s findings, KGMU is preparing to initiate dismissal proceedings against him. The university administration is expected to write to the Director General of Medical Education to begin the process. Malik had already been suspended earlier after an FIR was registered against him.
A woman resident doctor from the pathology department had accused Malik, who was also a resident doctor, of sexual harassment and pressuring her to change her religion. During the inquiry, statements of doctors and staff from the department were recorded. The committee concluded that the allegations were supported by evidence.
Sources also claimed that two professors at KGMU are under scrutiny for allegedly helping Malik evade arrest. Call detail records reportedly show long phone conversations between Malik and the two professors. It is also being alleged that Malik received a large sum of money for marrying a Hindu woman, though police say these claims are still being verified.
