The BJP has swept the 2026 Maharashtra civic polls, winning 1,425 of the 2,869 seats across 29 municipal corporations and capturing control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. This marks the end of the Thackeray family’s nearly three decade dominance over the cash rich civic body.

In the 227 member BMC, the BJP won 89 seats while its ally Shiv Sena secured 29. The Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray managed 65 seats and the MNS won six. The Congress, which contested in alliance with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, secured 24 seats. AIMIM won eight seats, the NCP three, the Samajwadi Party two, and the NCP led by Sharad Pawar managed just one seat.

The BJP also delivered a major blow to the Pawar camp in Pune by winning 119 seats. The Ajit Pawar led NCP finished a distant second with 27 seats, while the NCP led by Sharad Pawar won three. The Congress managed to win 15 seats in the Pune civic body.

In Nagpur, the BJP dominated the 151 member corporation by winning 102 seats, while the Congress was reduced to 34. Nashik also saw a strong BJP performance with 72 seats, followed by Shiv Sena with 26, Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray with 15, Congress with three and NCP with four.

The BJP continued its winning streak in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where it secured 57 seats. Shiv Sena followed with 13 seats, the Congress won one, while other parties registered with the State Election Commission, including AIMIM, collectively bagged 33 seats.

According to the final statewide tally, the BJP emerged as the largest party with 1,425 seats. Shiv Sena won 399 seats, Congress 324, NCP 167, Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray 155, NCP led by Sharad Pawar 36, MNS 13 and BSP six seats. Parties registered with the State Election Commission won 129 seats, unrecognised parties 196 seats and independents secured 19 seats.

The civic polls were held in major cities including Mumbai, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Navi Mumbai, Vasai Virar, Kalyan Dombivli, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Solapur, Amravati, Akola, Nashik, Pimpri Chinchwad, Pune, Thane, Malegaon, Jalna and several others.

Voting took place on January 15 and the results were declared on Friday, January 16. Around 50 percent polling was recorded in Mumbai and similar turnout was seen across the other municipal corporations. Exit polls had earlier predicted a clean sweep for the BJP and Shiv Sena alliance, a forecast that largely held true in the final results.
