A Dalit youth in Aurai was seriously injured and lost eyesight in one eye after being attacked during an argument near a canal, police said on Monday. The 20-year-old, identified as Rahul, was referred from the district hospital to the BHU Trauma Centre in Varanasi on Sunday for advanced treatment due to the severity of his injuries.
According to Superintendent of Police Abhimanyu Manglik, the incident occurred on Friday afternoon when Rahul went to the canal to defecate. An argument erupted with the accused, Shankar Bind, who objected to Rahul’s presence there. The attacker allegedly used caste-based slurs before assaulting Rahul.
“When Rahul tried to escape, the accused allegedly pierced a motorcycle key into his left eye and threatened to kill him,” SP Manglik said.
Rahul collapsed in severe pain, and the attacker fled when locals gathered at the scene.
Police reached the spot after being informed and took Rahul first to a community health centre and then to the district hospital. The SP confirmed that a case has been registered and that investigations are ongoing.
