India has formally expressed its condolences to Iran over the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited the Embassy of Iran in New Delhi on Thursday, where he signed the condolence book on behalf of the Government of India. Iranian Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, was present during the visit.
Khamenei was killed on February 28 when a joint US-Israel airstrike targeted his official residence in Tehran. His death came hours after the two countries launched coordinated air strikes across the Iranian capital.
The gesture from New Delhi comes after days of silence from the Indian government on the killing, which had drawn criticism from several political leaders and organisations within the country.
