Bihar Woman Roshan Khatoon Dies After Mob Attack During Ramadan Fast, Allegedly Forced to Drink Alcohol and Urine

Victim tied to pole and assaulted; village head’s son detained; husband demands death penalty for accused.

Roshan Khatoon, a Muslim woman from Madhubani, Bihar, died on March 1 after being beaten by a mob when she asked the village head for help.

A Muslim woman from Amhi village in Madhubani district’s Ghoghardiha block in Bihar died on March 1 after being allegedly beaten by a mob when she went to meet the local village head to resolve a dispute. The victim, identified as Roshan Khatoon, was admitted to Patna Medical College and Hospital following the attack on February 28, where she succumbed to her injuries.

According to residents, Roshan Khatoon had approached the village head, identified as Kumari Devi, hoping to peacefully settle a local matter that reportedly involved her husband. Instead of receiving help, she was allegedly set upon by a mob led by the village head’s son, Manu Singh, along with others including family members.

What Witnesses Saw

Eyewitnesses said the attackers tied Roshan Khatoon to a pole and beat her severely. The assault continued despite her pleas for them to stop, and she was allegedly abused during the attack.

“She had gone there to ask for justice. Instead of listening to her complaint, some people began beating her. It was shocking for the entire village,” an eyewitness said.

Another resident described the scene as deeply disturbing. “People saw what was happening, but the beating continued. She was helpless and kept asking them to stop,” the resident said.

Fasting Victim Allegedly Forced to Drink Alcohol Mixed With Urine

According to local digital publication Mithla Samachar and eyewitness accounts, Roshan Khatoon was observing her Ramadan fast at the time of the assault. She reportedly asked for a glass of water but was allegedly forced to drink a mixture of alcohol and urine, an act that has caused widespread outrage. However, police officials cautioned that these specific claims are yet to be fully verified.

“We have seen some reports about the victim fasting and asking for water. At this stage, we cannot confirm these details. The investigation is continuing, and all aspects are being examined,” a police officer associated with the investigation said.

Family Demands Death Penalty, Community Vows to Fight for Justice

Roshan Khatoon’s husband has demanded the death penalty for those responsible for her killing. Ajay Mansuri, state president of the Mansuri community, vowed that the community would pursue justice at every level. “I will make sure that we go to every length to bring justice to the deceased, and we all want the culprits to be hanged till death,” he said.

FIR Registered, Village Head’s Son Detained

Police registered an FIR following the incident and launched a formal investigation. The son of the village head has been detained and is being questioned. Authorities said they are working to identify all individuals who were present at the time of the assault.

“We have detained the son of the village head and he is being questioned. We are identifying everyone present at the time of the incident. Strict action will be taken against anyone found responsible,” a police officer said.

Security has been stepped up in and around the village to prevent further tension. Officers confirmed that further arrests may follow as more evidence is gathered.

“We will examine every detail of the case. No one involved in the incident will be spared under the law,” an officer said.

Shock and Anger Across the District

News of Roshan Khatoon’s death spread rapidly and triggered deep anger among residents, social activists and community members across Madhubani district. Many said the incident exposed how vulnerable people, particularly from minority communities, are when they seek help from local authorities in rural Bihar.

“People go to village leaders hoping to settle issues peacefully. What happened to Roshan Khatoon has shocked many families,” a local resident said.

A community elder summed up the grief felt across the area. “Roshan Khatoon was a poor woman who went to ask for help. Her death has deeply hurt people here. We want justice for her and safety for all citizens,” the elder said.
