A group of cattle traders was allegedly attacked by self-proclaimed cow vigilantes in Hyderabad late Sunday night. The incident took place in the Tukkuguda area under the jurisdiction of the Pahadi Shareef Police Station, where a vehicle carrying cattle was intercepted by a group of men.
According to the victims, they were transporting 14 oxen from Mallepally to sell at a weekly market in Tukkuguda when they were stopped at a junction by a large group.
“We were stopped by around 100 to 150 people carrying sticks and rods. They started attacking us without listening,” one of the injured men said.
The traders claimed that despite showing valid documents for transporting the cattle, the attackers continued the assault. “We had all the permission papers, but they did not spare us,” another victim said.
During the attack, one of the drivers reportedly suffered a broken finger, and the vehicle carrying the cattle was badly damaged. The traders estimated the value of the animals at around ₹6 lakh, stating that they suffered heavy losses.
Allegations of Police Inaction
The victims also alleged that police personnel were present at the spot but failed to intervene effectively. “Even when we tried to escape, they chased us and continued beating us. The police did nothing,” one of them claimed.
They further said that the attackers forcibly unloaded the cattle and later sent them to a local gaushala.
Police Version Differs
However, the police have given a different version of events. Station House Officer B Lakshmi Narayana Reddy said that while the incident did occur, the number of attackers was much smaller.
“A crowd had gathered, but only three to four people were involved in the assault,” the officer said.

Police confirmed that three suspects have been identified and taken into custody, and further investigation is ongoing.
Case Registered, Probe On
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to causing hurt and wrongful restraint. Authorities said they are examining all aspects of the incident, including the claims made by the victims.
The cattle involved have been shifted to a gaushala in the city.
