A tense situation has emerged in Dumarmunda village under Debgan Panchayat in Raighar block of Odisha’s Nabarangpur district after the death of a 65-year-old woman, Raimati Gond, on Tuesday, around noon. The woman’s son has alleged that he is being prevented from burying his mother according to Christian rituals on his private land.
The son, Gnajru Gond, said he wished to perform the last rites peacefully on his own property, but local villagers reportedly opposed the burial, leading to a standoff in the area.
Villagers Oppose Burial, Family Faces Obstruction
According to local accounts, tensions escalated soon after the woman’s death when the family began preparations for burial. The son has claimed that despite having land available and intending to carry out Christian funeral rites, villagers did not allow the process to continue.
The opposition from a section of the local community has left the grieving family unable to proceed with the last rites, adding to their distress during an already difficult time.
Allegations of Administrative Inaction
The family has also raised concerns over the response of the local administration. They allege that despite informing the police about the situation, no effective intervention has been made to resolve the dispute or ensure that the burial can take place peacefully.

As of now, the matter remains unresolved, with the body still awaiting burial and the family seeking urgent support from authorities.
