United States President Donald Trump on Thursday described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “friend” and said the two leaders had a “very good conversation” amid ongoing diplomatic developments in West Asia.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said, “I had a very good talk with him, and he’s a friend of mine from India, and he’s doing great. We had a very good conversation.”
The remarks come days after Modi revealed that he had spoken to Trump over the phone to review bilateral ties and regional security issues.
“Received a call from my friend President Donald Trump. We reviewed the substantial progress achieved in our bilateral cooperation in various sectors,” Modi said, adding that both countries are committed to strengthening their Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
Focus on West Asia and Maritime Security
The conversation between the two leaders also focused on the evolving situation in West Asia. Modi highlighted the importance of stability in key global trade routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz.
“We also discussed the situation in West Asia and stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure,” Modi said.
The waterway is considered one of the most critical oil transit routes in the world, making its security a major global concern.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor described the exchange as “a very positive and productive call,” signalling strong diplomatic coordination between the two countries.
Ceasefire Announcement Between Israel and Lebanon
The conversation comes at a time when the US is actively involved in diplomatic efforts in the region. Trump also announced that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire following recent tensions.
He said he held “excellent conversations” with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, leading to the temporary truce.
“On Tuesday, the two countries met for the first time in 34 years in Washington, D.C.,” Trump noted, referring to high-level talks facilitated by the US.
US Push for Long-Term Peace
Trump said his administration is continuing efforts to secure a lasting resolution in the region. He has tasked Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and senior military officials to carry forward the negotiations.
“I have directed Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Rubio to work with Israel and Lebanon to achieve a lasting peace,” Trump said.
Highlighting his role in global diplomacy, he added, “It has been my honour to solve nine wars across the world, and this will be my 10th.”
