Darul Uloom Deoband has imposed a strict ban on the use of smartphones and other multimedia devices among its students, aiming to strengthen discipline and improve focus on education.
According to an official order issued by hostel in-charge Mufti Ashraf Abbas, students are no longer allowed to keep or use multimedia mobile phones, including smartphones and tablets, within the campus. The directive clearly warns that any violation could lead to expulsion from the institution.
“Students Must Stay Focused on Education”
Explaining the decision, Mufti Ashraf Abbas said the restriction is meant to prevent distractions and ensure students remain committed to their studies. “This step has been taken to keep students disciplined and to increase their interest in education,” he said.
The order further states that if a multimedia device is found during inspections, strict action will be taken. “If a smartphone is recovered from any student, it will be considered his possession, regardless of whether he was using it or not,” the notice reads.
Expulsion Warning for Violations
The institution has made it clear that students found with such devices during checks will face ‘akhraj’—a term used for removal or expulsion from the seminary. The administration has also indicated that no excuses will be accepted if a device is discovered.
Officials believe that excessive use of smartphones negatively impacts students’ academic performance by diverting their attention away from their primary purpose of learning.
Not the First Time
This is not the first instance of such a restriction at the seminary. Similar measures were implemented last year, when authorities also conducted room inspections to enforce the rule.
By reintroducing and tightening the ban, the institution aims to create an environment where students can dedicate themselves fully to religious and academic studies without digital distractions.
