In Nagpur, an NGO operator has been arrested over serious allegations of sexual harassment, coercion, and pressuring employees to follow certain religious practices.
The accused, identified as Riyaz Fazil Qazi, runs organisations including Fikar Foundation and Universal Multipurpose Society. He was arrested after a complaint was filed at the Mankapur police station.
Police said the case is being treated seriously, with the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) joining the probe. Authorities are now examining the NGO’s funding, activities, and internal operations.
A senior officer said, “A detailed investigation is underway, and all allegations are being verified from multiple angles.”
Survivor Alleges Repeated Harassment
The main complaint was filed by a 23-year-old woman who worked as the organisation’s HR head. In her FIR, she alleged repeated incidents of harassment by the accused.
She claimed that on her birthday in July 2024, Qazi called her into his cabin, hugged her without consent, kissed her forehead, and told her he did not want to let her go. “I did not resist because I feared losing my job,” she stated in her complaint.
The FIR further alleges that such behaviour continued over time. The accused allegedly tried to embrace her on multiple occasions and even switched off CCTV cameras before making advances.
Claims of Surveillance and Online Stalking
The complaint also includes allegations of digital surveillance. According to the FIR, Qazi allegedly created a fake Instagram account to monitor the movements and activities of female staff members.
Police are currently examining social media records, call data, and electronic evidence as part of the investigation.
Allegations of Religious Pressure
One of the key aspects of the case involves claims of religious coercion at the workplace. The complainant alleged that employees were pressured to follow certain practices during work-related activities.
Her sister, who briefly worked with the NGO, was allegedly asked to recite prayers and wear specific clothing during field visits. She later resigned within two months due to discomfort.
Other employees have also reportedly raised concerns, with some claiming they left their jobs due to similar pressure.
Defamation and Threat Allegations
The FIR also mentions that the accused allegedly made abusive calls to the family members of former employees. In one instance, he is accused of using derogatory language and making defamatory remarks about women associated with the organisation.
An audio clip of such a conversation has reportedly surfaced and is being examined by investigators.
Police Statement and Ongoing Probe
Senior Inspector Haresh Kalsekar said that the accused has been remanded to police custody till April 23. He added that at least three women have already come forward, and more complaints may surface.
Police are reviewing CCTV footage, witness statements, and other evidence to determine the full extent of the allegations.
Political Reaction
Reacting to the case, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “We are keeping a close watch. A full investigation is underway, and strict action will be taken against the accused.”
