Rahul Gandhi on Saturday demanded a high-level investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a girl from the Vishwakarma community in Ghazipur, raising serious questions about law and order and police response.
In a post on X, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said the incident reflects a disturbing pattern where victims and their families struggle even to get basic justice.
“In Ghazipur, a daughter was brutally raped and murdered, and her family was threatened when they tried to file an FIR,” he said.
“No moral right to remain in power”
Gandhi strongly criticised the authorities, saying that a government loses its legitimacy if families are forced to plead for legal action.
“In a country and state where parents have to beg just to file an FIR for their daughter, that government has no moral right to remain in power,” he said.
He demanded strict action against police officials found guilty of negligence and called for immediate protection for the victim’s family.
“Action must be taken against guilty police officers, the family must be protected, and a high level investigation must be conducted to ensure justice,” he added.
Links to past cases, raises larger concern
Gandhi also drew parallels with previous high profile cases, including Hathras, Kathua and Unnao, alleging a recurring pattern in crimes against women.
“Every time the victim is poor, Dalit, backward or tribal. Every time, the same truth emerges — protection for the accused and harassment for the victim,” he said.
He questioned both Narendra Modi and Yogi Adityanath, asking why women continue to feel unsafe.
“Why are daughters not safe under your rule?” he asked.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra echoes concerns
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also criticised the handling of the case, alleging that the victim’s family faced resistance and intimidation.
“In Ghazipur, delay in filing the case, threats to the family and pressure from powerful people show that crimes against women have reached a peak,” she said.
She further accused the ruling establishment of siding with the accused in several such cases.
“Whenever a woman faces atrocity, the victim herself is further harassed. This has become an unspoken rule,” she said.
Incident under investigation
The case relates to a teenage girl whose body was found on April 15 in the Karanda area of Ghazipur. Her family has alleged that she was sexually assaulted and murdered.
Police have said that an investigation is underway, while locals and relatives continue to demand swift justice and accountability.
