Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is set for a second consecutive term as early trends and final results from the Assam Assembly Election 2026 show a strong win for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Sarma emerged as one of the biggest winners of the election, leading with 1,24,996 votes and maintaining a massive margin of 87,701 votes over his nearest Congress rival, according to Election Commission data. In Jalukbari, he secured 1,12,186 votes, defeating his opponent by more than 80,000 votes.
The NDA has crossed the majority mark in the 126-member Assembly, leading or winning in 102 seats, marking a decisive mandate in the state.
Gaurav Gogoi Loses Jorhat, BJP Registers Key Wins
One of the major setbacks for the Congress came in Jorhat, where senior leader Gaurav Gogoi lost to BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami by a margin of 23,182 votes. Goswami secured 69,439 votes while Gogoi received 46,257 votes.
In Guwahati Central, Gen Z candidate Kunki Chowdhury was defeated by BJP veteran Vijay Gupta, while Pijush Hazarika of the BJP also secured victory in Jagiroad.
BJP Strengthens Hold in Assam Assembly
According to the Election Commission of India, the BJP was leading in 52 seats and had won 30, while its allies also performed strongly. The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) together were leading in 20 seats.
The Congress was leading in 18 seats and had won one, while its ally Raijor Dal was leading in two. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) won one seat and was leading in another.
Vote Share Shift Favors BJP
The results also show a clear consolidation of BJP support in Assam. The party’s vote share increased from 33.6% in 2016 to 38.59% in 2026, marking a significant rise of around five percentage points.
In contrast, the AIUDF’s vote share dropped to 5.29%, compared to 9.4% earlier. The Congress vote share remained largely stable at 29.26%, slightly down from 30% in 2021.
Sarma and BJP Call Result a “Historic Mandate”
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia described the outcome as a “historic mandate,” crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for the party’s performance.
Sonowal thanked voters for their support, while Saikia said the results reflect strong public trust in BJP leadership and governance.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also scheduled to visit the BJP headquarters in Delhi later in the day, where the party is expected to celebrate its performance across multiple states, including Assam and West Bengal.
