A Trinamool Congress (TMC) said a party worker was killed in alleged post-poll violence in Birbhum district, triggering fresh political tensions following the 2026 Assembly election results. The BJP has denied involvement, even as both parties traded serious allegations over the incident.

TMC Booth President Killed in Nanoor

The incident took place in Santoshpur village under Nanoor police station limits. The deceased has been identified as Abir Sheikh (40), a local booth president of the Trinamool Congress.

Another person, Chandu Sheikh, was seriously injured in the attack and has been admitted to a hospital in Bolpur.

According to the victim’s family, Abir Sheikh was attacked with sharp weapons during unrest that broke out after the election results were declared.

TMC Alleges Targeted Killing by BJP Supporters

TMC leaders and the victim’s family have accused BJP supporters of carrying out the attack. Local TMC leader Bidhan Maji claimed the killing was part of a broader pattern of violence.

“BJP is running terror everywhere after its victory. Abir was our booth president. He was killed by slitting his throat with a sharp weapon,” he alleged.

The party also claimed that several of its workers and leaders were targeted in different parts of the area.

BJP Rejects Charges, Blames TMC for Violence

The Bharatiya Janata Party denied the allegations and accused TMC workers of starting the violence during victory celebrations.

Former BJP district leader Sannyasicharan Mondal said, “None of our workers are involved. Some people are creating incidents to defame the BJP. We have asked the police to take strict action.”

The BJP also claimed that one of its workers was seriously injured in the clashes and is in critical condition.

Houses Vandalised, Tensions Rise

Following the incident, multiple cases of vandalism and arson were reported in the Nanoor area. Homes of several TMC leaders and supporters were allegedly attacked.

Reports suggest that the house of a local TMC leader was burnt, while properties belonging to other party members were damaged or looted.

These incidents have created an atmosphere of fear in the region, with heavy police deployment to control the situation.
