Following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) sweeping victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections, a wave of unrest, vandalism, political clashes, and allegations of targeted intimidation have surfaced across several districts of West Bengal following the BJP’s sweeping electoral victory in the state. Reports from multiple regions indicate incidents ranging from murder and assault to vandalism of political offices, communal tension, and allegations of forcible shop closures.

The unrest has prompted heightened police deployment across sensitive areas, with the state administration confirming large-scale preventive detentions and multiple arrests.

Fatalities and Targeted Attacks

In Beleghata, Kolkata, the body of a Trinamool Congress worker, Biswajit Patnaik, was recovered under suspicious circumstances. According to family, Patnaik, who reportedly served as a Trinamool booth agent, had remained at home throughout the vote-counting day and stepped out briefly in the evening. When repeated attempts to contact him failed, family members launched a search and later discovered him lying in a bloodied state inside his residence after finding the door broken open. Police have registered a case of unnatural death at Beleghata Police Station and launched an investigation.

In a separate and more gruesome incident in Santoshpur, Nanoor, Birbhum, Trinamool Congress booth president Abir Sheikh was allegedly murdered on Tuesday after being attacked by unidentified assailants. Local sources claimed his throat was slit with a sharp weapon. He died on the spot. Another Trinamool worker sustained severe injuries in the same attack and is currently undergoing treatment at the Bolpur Sub-divisional Hospital, where his condition is reported to be critical.

Also in Birbhum, Jamshed Ali Khan, Trinamool Congress district spokesperson, was allegedly assaulted in front of the State Bank branch in Santiniketan. According to party sources, a group of youths wearing saffron scarves surrounded Khan and assaulted him. The Trinamool Congress has accused BJP-backed miscreants of orchestrating the attack and unleashing what it described as a “reign of terror” in the district. Nanoor MLA Bidhan Chandra Majhi directly blamed BJP workers for the violence.

“BJP operatives are wreaking havoc everywhere. Our booth president has had his throat slit, another worker is battling for life. Immediate police action is essential,” he said.

Political Offices Allegedly Occupied and Vandalized

Reports of vandalism and forcible occupation of political offices have emerged from several districts.
In Haripur Gram Panchayat under Nandigram-1 Block, several regional Trinamool Congress offices were allegedly vandalized and occupied by BJP supporters. At Mahishadal Raj College, members of the ABVP, the student wing associated with the RSS, allegedly tore down Trinamool flags and festoons before hoisting their own. In Falta, supporters chanting “Jai Shri Ram” allegedly vandalized the party office of Trinamool candidate Jahangir Khan.

Bulldozer Action in Kolkata and Visual Vandalism

Fresh controversy erupted over allegations that BJP supporters used bulldozers to demolish shops in Kolkata’s New Market area, with claims that several Muslim-owned establishments were specifically targeted. Addressing a press conference at Lalbazar on Wednesday, Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nanda stated that an investigation is underway.
“The role and conduct of police personnel present at the site are also being examined,” he said.

Separately, allegations have emerged from Maynaguri block in Jalpaiguri district, where BJP workers are accused of forcibly shutting down shops owned by members of the Muslim community.

Lenin Statue Vandalized in Murshidabad

In Jiaganj, Murshidabad, BJP supporters allegedly vandalized a statue of Lenin located in front of Sripatsingh College on Tuesday night while chanting “Jai Shri Ram.” A local resident Siddique Ali strongly condemned the vandalism of the Lenin statue, describing it as an act inconsistent with the social and cultural values of the region. He said the recent developments in Jiaganj, one of Murshidabad’s oldest and historically significant towns, were deeply unfortunate and concerning.

Referring to booth-wise voting trends, Ali observed that the electoral outcome reflected the people’s democratic desire for political change, with voters from diverse communities and social backgrounds expressing their mandate through support for various opposition forces. Ali wrote on social media, “while electoral shifts are a natural and legitimate part of democracy, the incidents of unrest and vandalism that followed have caused widespread disappointment among residents.”

Ali further stated that democratic processes inevitably produce both winners and losers, but maintaining peace, communal harmony, and mutual respect remains the collective responsibility of all sections of society. He urged political workers and citizens alike to respect the public mandate while ensuring that the democratic transition does not give way to violence or social discord.

Communal Tension in Nadia

In Nadia district, allegations have surfaced that BJP workers warned local mosques against broadcasting the adhan over loudspeakers. Mrinal Biswas Mini, a Leftist leader from Nadia district, wrote on social media: “In the Beltala booth area under Bogula No. 2 Gram Panchayat in Nadia district, people from both Hindu and Muslim communities have lived together in harmony for a long time. Yesterday, following their electoral victory, the BJP issued a decree stating that the adhan cannot be broadcast via loudspeakers. Threats were issued door-to-door, and celebrations—marked by throwing firecrackers inside the Eidgah—were carried out. We met with the local residents today and assured them that, should the need arise, they need only call upon us, and we will stand by their side. The mornings in our West Bengal begin with the Fajr adhan and the morning kirtan. Our struggle will continue against those who seek to render this morning—brighter than the day itself—even darker than the night.”

As West Bengal navigates the aftermath of a historic electoral transition, the post-poll unrest has cast a shadow over the democratic verdict.

Political Reactions

Senior advocate and CPI(M) leader Bikashranjan Bhattacharyya expressed serious concern over the emerging political situation in the state, stating that there should be “no illusion” regarding the nature of the incoming BJP administration. He alleged that the new government could prove to be “equally, if not more, violent and corrupt” than the outgoing Mamata Banerjee-led dispensation. Bhattacharyya claimed that incidents targeting marginalized communities had already begun surfacing immediately after the declaration of the election results. He further alleged that reports of political violence and intimidation were continuing despite public appeals for restraint made by State BJP President Samik Bhattacharya.

Drawing parallels with the post-election political climate of 2011, the veteran Left leader remarked that the current developments reflected a troubling continuity in Bengal’s political culture, where change in power often results in a transfer of methods rather than a transformation of governance.

Calling for a united democratic response, Bhattacharyya urged Left-leaning, secular, and democratic forces to begin coordinated resistance against what he described as growing authoritarian tendencies. He stressed that safeguarding democratic institutions and preserving social harmony would require organized, principled, and sustained political action.

Meanwhile, West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya sought to distance the party from the incidents. “No office belonging to any political party can be occupied. BJP will not tolerate such actions, and strict steps will be taken against those involved in creating unrest,” he said.

Police Action

West Bengal Director General of Police Siddh Nath Gupta said law enforcement agencies have taken extensive action to control the violence. DGP stated, “More than 200 FIRS have been registered so far, with 433 people arrested in specific cases.” Stating that two deaths were reported from Nanoor and New Town, he added that over 1,100 individuals have been detained under preventive provisions.
