The X (formerly Twitter) account of PDP leader Iltija Mufti has been withheld in India following a legal demand from authorities, the platform confirmed.
Users trying to access her profile in India are now seeing a message stating that the account has been restricted “in response to a legal demand.” Such notices are issued by X when content or accounts are blocked under official legal requests.
The action has triggered fresh discussion around freedom of expression, political speech, and online regulation in Jammu and Kashmir.
Action Linked to FIR Over Old Video of Syed Ali Shah Geelani
The development comes shortly after the Cyber Police Kashmir registered an FIR over the circulation of a video featuring late Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
Authorities have alleged that certain social media posts were sharing or promoting content that could “encourage separatist narratives” and disturb public order.
Cyber Police Srinagar had earlier registered FIR No. 11 under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), stating that online content was being used in a way that could impact peace and security in the region.
Iltija Mufti’s Statement on Video Sharing
Iltija Mufti had earlier responded to the controversy, saying that she alone should be held responsible for sharing the video clip.
She also urged authorities not to target or harass people who may have simply viewed, reposted, or interacted with her content online.
