“Sanatanam Should Be Eradicated”: DMK Leader Udhayanidhi Stalin Reignites Row in Tamil Nadu Assembly

Tamil Nadu Leader of Opposition and DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin triggered a fresh political controversy on Tuesday during a heated session in the Tamil Nadu Assembly after he once again called for the “eradication” of Sanatan Dharma.

Speaking in the House, he said, “Sanatanam, which divides people, should be eradicated.” The remark immediately drew sharp reactions from opposition members and intensified the ongoing ideological debate in the state.

This is not the first time Udhayanidhi Stalin has made such comments. Earlier, his similar statement had sparked nationwide outrage and legal scrutiny, with critics accusing him of insulting religious sentiments.

“Work together for Tamil Nadu’s development,” says DMK leader

During his speech, Udhayanidhi Stalin also appealed for political cooperation between ruling and opposition parties. He said that even though they sit on different sides of the House, all leaders must work together for the development of Tamil Nadu.

“Even if we sit in different rows as ruling government and opposition, we all should work together for the development of Tamil Nadu,” he said.

He also mentioned Chief Minister MK Stalin extending greetings to newly-elected leaders, calling it a sign of political civility that should continue.

Remarks on state song and national anthem spark debate

Udhayanidhi Stalin also raised concerns about cultural and political symbolism in the Assembly. He said that the Tamil Nadu state song should not be given less importance than other national songs.

“The Opposition has raised concerns after the Tamil Nadu state song was played after Vande Mataram. Our state song should never be pushed to the second position,” he said.

He also pointed out inconsistencies in the use of national and state symbols in different states, indirectly criticising political decisions taken elsewhere in the country.

BJP strongly criticises Udhayanidhi Stalin’s remarks

The remarks triggered a strong response from the BJP, which accused the DMK leader of repeatedly hurting religious sentiments.

BJP spokesperson C.R. Kesavan said, “These repeat offenders must remember that the Tamil Nadu state emblem has a temple Gopuram. The people of Tamil Nadu will not forgive such insults to their faith.”

He also compared Udhayanidhi Stalin to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, saying, “He is the Rahul Gandhi of Tamil Nadu, promoting divisive politics.”

“Sanatan eradication” controversy resurfaces

Udhayanidhi Stalin’s latest statement has revived the major controversy that first erupted nearly three years ago when he made similar remarks about Sanatan Dharma. At that time, he had compared it to diseases like dengue and malaria, saying it should be eradicated rather than opposed.

The statement had led to nationwide protests and legal complaints, with critics accusing him of promoting hate speech. The Madras High Court later observed that his comments amounted to hate speech, intensifying the political backlash.

Despite criticism, Udhayanidhi has previously defended his remarks, saying they were aimed at opposing caste discrimination and inequality.

Exchange with Chief Minister adds political interest

In a lighter moment, Udhayanidhi Stalin also recalled his personal connection with newly elected Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, saying they had studied in the same college. He added, “We would like to share our experience and knowledge. The Chief Minister should also accept our suggestions.”

The Tamil Nadu Assembly session also saw Vijay referencing democratic traditions and the historical role of Speakers in parliamentary systems, adding a reflective tone to the proceedings.
