Following the deadly fire at a hotel in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar that claimed 21 lives, a delegation from the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Delhi unit visited the site of the tragedy to express solidarity with the victims and recognise the efforts of local residents who helped save lives during the incident.
The delegation was led by Mohammad Salimullah Khan, Ameer-e-Halqa of JIH Delhi. Other members included Kamal Ahmed, Saquib Yaseen, Sajid Umair and Mohammad Naushad Khan.
During the visit, the delegation met Riyazuddin Mansouri, the mattress shop owner from Hauz Rani who became one of the key civilian rescuers during the fire at the Flourish Stay B&B hotel. JIH Delhi honoured him with a special award of ₹1 lakh in recognition of his humanitarian efforts and courage.
Mattresses Used to Save Trapped Guests
According to eyewitnesses and local residents, when the fire broke out and smoke engulfed the multi-storey building, several guests trapped inside began calling for help from windows and rooftops.
Riyazuddin Mansouri reportedly reacted immediately by bringing mattresses from his nearby shop and spreading them across the road below the building. With the help of family members and other locals, he encouraged trapped people to jump onto the mattresses to escape the flames.
The rescue effort is believed to have helped save around 14 to 15 people.
“Humanity is Above Religion and Caste”
Speaking during the visit, Mohammad Salimullah Khan said Riyazuddin Mansouri’s actions reflected the spirit of humanity and communal harmony.
“In times of crisis, religion, caste and community become meaningless. Humanity and compassion become a person’s real identity,” he said.
He added that at a time when hatred and division were increasing in society, people like Mansouri represented India’s shared culture and human values.
Khan also praised the shop owner for risking both his safety and financial resources during the emergency. According to him, Mansouri used mattresses worth nearly ₹2 lakh without worrying about the loss.
“Such selflessness and dedication to humanity deserve recognition and appreciation,” he said.
Delegation Calls Act ‘Inspirational’
Members of the delegation described Mansouri’s actions as courageous and inspiring, saying such efforts strengthen trust, brotherhood and social harmony in society.
They said the award was not only meant to honour one individual but also to acknowledge the spirit of humanity shown during the tragedy.
The delegation expressed hope that Mansouri’s actions would inspire others and encourage values of compassion, mutual respect and public service among future generations.
