India has appointed senior diplomat Vipul as its next ambassador to Saudi Arabia, marking a significant moment in India’s diplomatic engagement with the Gulf region.

Vipul, a 1998-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, is currently serving as India’s ambassador to Qatar. He will soon take charge in Riyadh, replacing Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan.

His appointment is being seen as historically important because he is reportedly the first non-Muslim Indian diplomat to be appointed ambassador to Saudi Arabia since diplomatic relations between the two countries began in 1948.

The move is being viewed not only through a geopolitical lens but also as a symbolic shift in India’s diplomatic approach toward one of the most influential countries in West Asia.

Saudi Arabia’s Growing Importance for India

Saudi Arabia today holds a key place in India’s foreign policy. Apart from being a major energy supplier, the Gulf nation is home to millions of Indian workers and plays an important role in regional politics and global Islamic affairs.

The country is also emerging as a major economic and investment hub under its Vision 2030 programme, creating opportunities in infrastructure, technology, trade, tourism, and culture.

India and Saudi Arabia have significantly expanded their ties in recent years, moving beyond a traditional oil-based relationship to a broader strategic partnership involving defence cooperation, investment, and regional security.

Vipul’s experience in Gulf affairs is expected to help strengthen these growing ties.

Extensive Experience in Gulf and International Affairs

During his diplomatic career, Vipul has served in Indian missions in Cairo, Colombo, Geneva, and Dubai.

He has handled several important areas, including political and commercial relations, international security, development cooperation, disarmament, and media affairs.

Between 2014 and 2017, he worked closely with India’s External Affairs Minister as Director and later Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs.

He later served as Consul General of India in Dubai from 2017 to 2020 and then became Joint Secretary (Gulf) in the Ministry of External Affairs from 2020 to 2023.

Since August 2023, he has been serving as India’s ambassador to Qatar.

Strong Academic Background

Before joining the Indian Foreign Service, Vipul studied Mechanical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, graduating in 1994. He also holds an MBA degree from Indian School of Business.

Known as a sports enthusiast, Vipul is regarded as a diplomat with deep knowledge of Gulf politics and regional affairs.

The Ministry of External Affairs announced that he is expected to take up his new assignment shortly.
