A 19-year-old medical aspirant, Sheik Sana, died by suicide in Hyderabad on June 20, just a day before the NEET-UG re-examination scheduled across the country.
Police said a handwritten note was recovered from the scene in which she reportedly wrote, “No one is responsible for my death. I am taking my life.”
Incident Reported Under Miyapur Police Limits
The incident occurred at her residence under the limits of Miyapur Police Station. Officials said her sisters found her unresponsive in her room after she failed to come out for several hours.
She was immediately taken into custody for post-mortem examination, and a case has been registered.
NEET Aspirant Living With Sisters, Preparing for Re-Exam
According to police and reports, Sana was preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) and was staying with her two younger sisters in an apartment.
Her father, Sheikh Jafar Hussain, works in Kuwait, while her mother had travelled to Andhra Pradesh around ten days earlier.
Police said Sana had previously appeared for NEET but was unable to clear the exam, after which she joined long-term coaching and attempted the test again.
Suspected Academic Pressure Behind Death
Investigators believe academic stress, pressure to succeed, and anxiety related to previous exam outcomes may have contributed to her decision.
“She had scored above 90% in intermediate and was academically strong, but she was under pressure due to repeated attempts,” a police source said.
Rising Concern Over Student Suicides Ahead of NEET Re-Exam
The incident comes amid growing concern over student mental health, with multiple reports of suicides among NEET aspirants in recent weeks.
The NEET-UG re-examination was held on June 21 after the earlier exam on May 3 was cancelled following a question paper leak investigation.
Officials said Sana’s sisters, studying in Classes 10 and 6, are currently being cared for by their aunt.
Police Investigation Continues
Police have shifted the body to Gandhi Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Authorities said further inquiry is underway, and they are also reviewing circumstances surrounding the case as part of the investigation.
