West Bengal: Two Content Creators Arrested in Domkal Over Videos Criticising State Government

The arrest of two social media content creators from Domkal in Murshidabad district has sparked a wider debate over freedom of expression and the limits of political criticism in a democracy.

The two individuals, identified as Firoz Al Mamun and Rajesh Mandal, were taken into custody by Domkal Police on Monday.

According to local reports, the arrests followed the publication of videos on social media that allegedly criticized policies of the state government.

YouTube and Facebook page built around political commentary

The duo reportedly ran a Facebook page titled “The Thoughts of Reality”, where they regularly posted videos on governance, corruption, social issues, and public welfare.

Over time, the page gained popularity for its political and social commentary, attracting a large online audience.

Sources say that earlier, during the previous Trinamool Congress regime, the creators had also posted content highlighting alleged corruption and civic issues. After the change in political leadership, they allegedly continued their critical commentary on government policies.

Arrest after critical videos, charges unclear

Their most recent videos reportedly questioned several government decisions, after which they were arrested.

However, officials have not yet publicly disclosed the specific legal provisions under which the two creators were detained, leading to questions and speculation.

Police authorities have not issued an official detailed statement so far.

Emotional reaction from detainees

Following the arrest, one of the detained creators was reportedly heard expressing disappointment, saying, “Those for whom I did all this, no one is there today.”

The statement has been widely shared on social media, further intensifying public debate around the case.

Legal experts and activists raise concerns

The arrests have drawn criticism from sections of the legal community and civil society.

A Calcutta High Court lawyer, Imtiaz Kabir, strongly opposed the action in a social media post, saying that criticism of the government is a constitutional right.

He said, “Criticizing the government, raising questions, or expressing dissent is not a crime. The Constitution guarantees freedom of expression.”

Kabir added that arrests for dissent could create a “chilling effect” on free speech and discourage citizens from speaking openly.

Human rights concerns over freedom of expression

Human rights activists have also expressed concern, warning that such actions may create fear among journalists, independent creators, and ordinary citizens who express opinions on digital platforms.

They argue that transparency in charges and proper legal procedure are essential in such cases.
