Mumbai Police have arrested a man identified as Fayyaz Premji, described in reports as an ex-Muslim, for allegedly distributing capsules containing a highly toxic chemical during a Muharram procession in the Byculla area. The incident took place near Rehmatabad Cemetery at Reay Road during the Ashura gathering, where large crowds had assembled.

According to police sources, the accused was seen distributing capsules to participants while claiming they were painkillers and immunity boosters. However, several people who consumed the capsules reportedly fell ill, triggering immediate alarm among volunteers and authorities.

A police officer said, “At least 11 people were taken to hospital after consuming the capsules. All of them are now stable and out of danger.”

Capsules Contained Lethal Zinc Phosphide

Investigators later found that the capsules allegedly contained zinc phosphide, a highly poisonous chemical commonly used as rat poison. Deputy Commissioner of Police Jayant Meena confirmed that the substance had been mixed into the capsules without any authorization.

Police have seized around 14,900 capsules from the accused. Officials also believe that a large number of capsules had already been distributed before he was stopped by security personnel.

A senior officer said, “The capsules were being distributed without permission and contained a toxic substance. The accused did not have any authorization to handle or distribute such material.”

Alleged Confession and Intent Under Probe

During interrogation, the accused allegedly admitted that his intention was to target the Muharram procession. According to police sources, Fayyaz Premji confessed that he had planned to cause large-scale harm.

He allegedly told investigators, “I wanted to kill around 15,000 people.”

Police further revealed that he had allegedly procured 50 kilograms of zinc phosphide and placed an order for 30,000 empty capsules, indicating preparation over several days.

Officials are now investigating whether others were involved in the alleged conspiracy and whether the plan extended beyond Mumbai.

‘Ex-Muslim’ Identity and Background of Accused

The accused, Fayyaz Premji, has been described in multiple reports as an ex-Muslim. He is a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) graduate and originally from Pune’s Viman Nagar area. Police said he had been staying in Mumbai’s Dongri area for around two weeks before the incident.

Investigators are also examining his travel history and personal background. Reports suggest that he had previously travelled to Iran and Iraq, though authorities have not confirmed any link between his travels and the alleged crime.

Locals in his neighbourhood told reporters that he had been going through personal difficulties, though police have not officially confirmed this aspect.

Police Action and Ongoing Investigation

Following his arrest, Premji was produced before a local court, which sent him to police custody for further interrogation. The capsules and chemical samples have been sent for forensic testing.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to causing harm using poisonous substances with intent to commit an offence.

Police officials said the investigation is continuing from all possible angles, including whether the accused acted alone or as part of a larger network.

A senior officer said, “We are examining every detail, including the source of the chemicals, financial transactions, and digital evidence. The motive is still under investigation.”

Authorities have also urged the public not to consume any unidentified capsules or medicines distributed during public gatherings and to immediately report such incidents to police.
