The initial autopsy report of the 12-year-old girl whose body was recovered from a pond in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas, has revealed a deeply disturbing account of sexual assault and extreme physical brutality. The medical findings, which emerged on Monday, have compelled law enforcement to add gang-rape charges to the investigation and establish a specialized six-member investigative bench to probe the heinous crime.
Autopsy Findings Point to Unimaginable Suffering
Conducted at the Katapukur morgue, the preliminary postmortem report paints a harrowing picture of the minor’s final moments. Forensic sources confirmed that the child endured a violent struggle before her death. Medical examiners documented deep wounds on her head caused by a forceful impact with a heavy object, which led to continuous and severe hemorrhaging. The examination also noted multiple nail scratches and bite marks across her body, alongside critical injuries to her private parts.
The report establishes that the victim was still alive when she was placed inside a sack and thrown into the pond. Doctors found a large volume of water in both her stomach and lungs, indicating that she drowned while already unconscious from the devastating head injury. Medical professionals concluded that the primary causes of death were a combination of excessive blood loss from the cranial trauma and subsequent drowning.
Multiple Arrests After Overnight Police Operations
The developments come amid continued public outrage over the incident, which has already resulted in the death of one suspect through a public lynching. Following strict directives from the state secretariat at Nabanna to restore order and accelerate the probe, a large-scale joint law enforcement operation was conducted across Baruipur through Sunday night.
The enforcement drive led to the apprehension of a third key suspect, identified as Anand Sardar, on Monday. This follows the previous arrests of Prabhas Mondal, who was initially detained during the kidnapping investigation and whose interrogation led police to the recovery of the body, and Dibakar Sardar. Additionally, three more individuals suspected of local involvement have been detained and are currently undergoing intensive interrogation.
Court Grants 14-Day Police Custody
On Monday, Prabhas Mondal and Dibakar Sardar were produced before the Baruipur Court amid a heavy police presence. Seeking maximum separation for questioning, the state prosecutor emphasised to the magistrate the highly sensitive nature of the crime.
“This is a special and deeply sensitive case. Crucial forensic samples are still being gathered, and vital scientific tests remain pending. There is an immediate risk of evidence tampering or information destruction if the accused are released,” the prosecution argued before the court.
The court accepted the arguments and granted police 14-day custody of both Mondal and Sardar, scheduling the next formal hearing for July 20. The newly arrested suspect, Anand Sardar, is scheduled to be produced in court on Wednesday, where investigators are expected to seek identical custodial terms.
