Congress MP Imran Masood has hit back at Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Udayveer Singh after the latter dismissed his comments on a possible alliance between the two parties ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
The exchange comes at a time when political parties have begun positioning themselves for the next Assembly polls, even though no formal announcement has been made regarding an alliance between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party.
Masood Says SP Benefited From Congress Alliance
Responding to Udayveer Singh’s remarks, Imran Masood claimed that the Samajwadi Party had gained significantly from its alliance with the Congress during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
“The Samajwadi Party is the one making noise for the alliance, and it was because of the alliance that you were able to get 37 seats in 2024. Otherwise, in 2022, you didn’t even cross the 120-seat mark,” Masood said.
He also alleged that the Samajwadi Party was uncomfortable with influential Muslim leaders.

“The Samajwadi Party cannot tolerate any Muslim leader or a leader who keeps his word, and such a leader is now in the Congress,” he said.
Udayveer Singh Rejects Alliance Speculation
The row began after Samajwadi Party leader Udayveer Singh said Imran Masood’s statements should not be taken seriously. He maintained that there had been no discussion regarding any alliance involving Masood and stressed that only the top leadership of the Samajwadi Party would decide on such political matters.
His remarks were seen as an attempt to dismiss speculation over seat-sharing or alliance talks ahead of the Assembly elections.
Political Tensions Ahead of 2027 Uttar Pradesh Polls
The public exchange reflects growing political activity in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
The Congress and the Samajwadi Party had contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections together as part of the INDIA alliance. The alliance performed strongly in Uttar Pradesh, with the Samajwadi Party emerging as the state’s largest party and the Congress winning six Lok Sabha seats.
Although political observers expect the two parties to explore another alliance for the 2027 Assembly elections, neither party has made an official announcement.
Meanwhile, all major political parties, including the BJP, Samajwadi Party, Congress, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), and regional outfits, have intensified their preparations through rallies, organisational expansion, and public outreach. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has also stepped up its political activities in Uttar Pradesh, indicating its intention to play a larger role in the upcoming elections.
