Twelve migrant workers from West Bengal’s Malda South parliamentary constituency, who were reportedly detained in Maharashtra’s Thane district, have been released following the intervention of Congress MP Isha Khan Choudhury.

The workers, all residents of areas under the Mothabari police station in Malda district, were employed in construction work in Thane when they were reportedly detained.

After learning about the incident, Choudhury wrote to Thane Police Commissioner Ashutosh Dumbre, requesting that the matter be examined and that the workers be released if there were no legal grounds for their continued detention.

In her letter, the MP identified the workers as Rahamatulla Sk, Md. Farijul Haque, Abu Zubair, Jakiul Hoque, Rakiul Sekh, Md. Rafikul Islam, Sonu Sekh, Md. Rakiul Hoque, Asad Sekh, Mahimud Haq, Sk Safikul and Md. Mostakim.

MP Cites Electoral Records

Choudhury said that the first eight workers were enrolled in the electoral roll after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and had voted in the 2026 elections.

She also informed the police that while Md. Mostakim’s name had been deleted from the electoral roll, he had already approached the competent electoral authority or tribunal for correction, and the matter was pending.

The Congress MP urged the police to release the workers in accordance with the law if there was no legal impediment to their continued detention.

‘People’s Interests Are Above Politics’

In a Facebook post, Choudhury said she had personally spoken to the Thane Police Commissioner and shared documents related to the workers’ identities, voter registration and other relevant records.

“After receiving information about the detention of 12 migrant workers from the Mothabari police station area under the Malda South Lok Sabha constituency in Thane, I took up the matter seriously,” she wrote.

She added that she had requested the police administration to consider their early release on humanitarian grounds if there were no legal obstacles.

Later, the MP announced that all 12 workers had been released.

“I am happy to inform you that all the workers have been released today. I sincerely thank the Thane Police Administration for its prompt action and cooperation in this matter,” she said.

Choudhury also said she would continue to support people from her constituency facing difficulties outside West Bengal.

“For me, the interests of the people are paramount, above political affiliations. If any citizen of Malda faces a problem anywhere in the country, it is my constitutional and moral duty to stand by them,” she said.
