Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces on the occasion of the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas, honouring their courage and sacrifice during the 1999 Kargil War.
In a post on X, Modi said the nation was grateful to the brave soldiers for their extraordinary courage and commitment to safeguarding India’s sovereignty.
“Their valour in the face of the most formidable conditions will forever remain a source of national pride. Their unwavering patriotism and devotion to duty will continue to inspire generations,” he wrote.
India observes Kargil Vijay Diwas every year on July 26 to commemorate its victory in the 1999 Kargil War. The day marks the success of Operation Vijay, during which Indian forces recaptured strategic heights occupied by Pakistani intruders. A total of 527 Indian soldiers laid down their lives in the conflict.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid homage to the fallen soldiers, describing Kargil Vijay Diwas as a symbol of the Indian Army’s indomitable courage and extraordinary valour. He said the soldiers forced the enemy back despite difficult terrain and extreme weather conditions.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who attended the commemorative event at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, said the threat of infiltration and proxy war continued and asserted that the Indian Army was fully prepared to meet any challenge. He also highlighted the government’s efforts to modernise the armed forces and strengthen defence capabilities under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi also paid tribute to the soldiers, saying the nation would forever remain indebted to their courage, valour and supreme sacrifice.
