A 19-year-old second-year BA student at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) reportedly died by suicide at the university’s Indira Gandhi (IG) Hall on August 11.
The student, identified as Irtiqa Sameer, was from Kolkata, West Bengal, and was pursuing philosophy at AMU. According to preliminary information, the incident came to light after her fellow students found her unresponsive in her hostel room.
She was taken to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, where doctors reportedly declared her dead. Her body has been kept in the hospital mortuary.
Family Informed, Postmortem Awaited
The university administration and police have informed the student’s family in Kolkata about the incident. The postmortem has reportedly not yet been conducted as her family has not arrived in Aligarh.
The postmortem and other legal procedures are expected to be carried out after the family reaches the city.
Police Investigating Circumstances
The reason behind the student’s death has not been officially established. Police and university authorities are investigating the matter.
Her mobile phone and hostel room are reportedly being examined, while statements from students who were present at the hostel are also being recorded. Officials are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the death after the investigation is completed.
At present, there is no official confirmation linking the incident to any particular reason or circumstance.
Earlier Student Deaths Reported at AMU
The incident comes after reports of other student deaths at AMU in recent years.
On February 20, 2025, Mohammad Shakir, a first-year MA Theology student, was found hanging from an iron rod at Mumtaz Hostel.
On October 24, 2025, an undergraduate student was reportedly found dead inside her hostel room at the AMU Women’s College.
Earlier, on January 12, 2026, a 20-year-old final-year diploma student allegedly died by suicide inside her hostel room.
The circumstances surrounding these cases were subject to separate investigations.
