A Class 8 student from Assam’s Kamrup district was allegedly gang-raped by five men at a homestay in Guwahati and later abandoned near Shukleshwar Ghat, police said. The minor was rescued by police early Tuesday morning after she had been reported missing.
The girl, from Pasaria village, had allegedly gone missing on Sunday afternoon. According to the police, she was later found in the Panbazar area of Guwahati.
Girl allegedly taken to homestay
According to preliminary information, a youth identified as Parameswar Nath from Goalpara allegedly lured the girl from Singimari and took her to Rangman Grand Homestay in Saukuchi.
Police said four other men — Hirkajyoti Das, Bishal Barua, Lakshidhar Nath and Rejip Ali — were allegedly involved in the incident. Bishal Barua and Lakshidhar Nath reportedly worked at the homestay.
The girl was allegedly assaulted during the night before being abandoned near Shukleshwar Ghat.
All five accused have reportedly been detained by Dadara Police in connection with the case.
Police rescue minor and add POCSO charges
Assam Police said a missing-person FIR was initially registered on August 23 at Dadara Police Outpost under Hajo Police Station.
“On 23 August, one FIR lodged at Dadara OP under Hajo Police Station regarding the disappearance of her minor who had left home on her own,” police said.
The police said they received information at around 5:47 am on August 24 that the girl had been seen in the Panbazar area.
“Acting promptly on the information, the IC, Dadara OP, along with the family members of the girl, reached the area and safely recovered her from near the Panbazar Pani Tanki,” the statement said.
Following the girl’s statement, police added Sections 6 and 17 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act to the case.
The minor has undergone a medical examination, while her statement has been recorded before a judicial magistrate.
Senior officers supervising investigation
Kamrup SSP, along with the Additional Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) and Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), is personally supervising the investigation, according to Assam Police.
The investigation is ongoing, and the allegations against the five detained men are yet to be established in court.
