At least 306 people have been killed and 49 remain missing in Manipur since ethnic violence broke out in May 2023, State Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam told the Assembly on Thursday.
The figures, recorded up to August 31, 2026, were provided in response to a question by BJP MLA Sapam Ranjan Singh.
60,000 Displaced
Konthoujam said the violence had displaced around 60,000 people and disrupted normal life across the state.
Of those displaced, around 36,000 have been resettled, while 24,000 remain in relief camps, according to government figures cited in reports.
The violence, which began on May 3, 2023, erupted between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo-Hmar communities following a Tribal Solidarity March in the hill districts against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
President’s Rule Imposed
Manipur was placed under President’s Rule in February 2025 after then-Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned amid the continuing ethnic conflict. Kuki-Zomi-Hmar groups had accused his government of responding to the violence in a partisan manner.
President’s Rule was revoked on February 4, 2026, when BJP leader Yumnam Khemchand Singh took oath as the new Chief Minister.
The 60-member Manipur Assembly had remained under suspended animation during President’s Rule.
The ethnic conflict has continued to cause large-scale displacement and disruption across the state, with thousands of people still living in relief camps more than three years after the violence began.
