Muslim villagers in Masurdanga village under Hariharpara Police Station in Murshidabad district came forward to help a financially distressed Hindu family arrange the cremation of a deceased woman, highlighting the ties between the two communities in the village.

Tustusi Das, a resident of the village, died on Thursday morning after reportedly suffering from a prolonged illness. Her family, facing financial difficulties, was unable to arrange the expenses needed for her cremation.

Muslim Villagers Raise Money for Cremation

After learning about the family’s situation, several young Muslim residents of Masurdanga stepped in to help.

The villagers collected contributions from people passing through the village roads to raise money for the cremation. According to the villagers, people contributed between Rs 20 and Rs 100, with the collected amount later handed over to the bereaved family.

Prashanta Das, a relative of the deceased, said the family had been struggling to arrange the last rites.

“My aunt had been ill for a long time and passed away on Thursday morning. We were unable to arrange the cremation because of our financial situation. That was when the Muslim villagers came forward to help us,” Das said.

He said the two communities had maintained close relations despite there being only two Hindu families in the village.

“There are only two Hindu families living in the entire village. There is no discrimination among us; we complement and support each other. Whenever we face a crisis, members of the Muslim community come forward to help. Our village is defined by Hindu-Muslim harmony and mutual respect,” he added.

Villagers Participate in Cremation Arrangements

Giasuddin Mia, a resident of Masurdanga, said villagers considered helping the family a collective responsibility.

“Only two Hindu families live in the village, while the Muslim population is larger. It is our moral duty to provide help and cooperation when they are in distress. It would reflect poorly on the village if a woman’s body could not be cremated simply because the family could not afford the expenses,” Mia told The Observer Post.

According to Mia, villagers not only collected money but also participated in the cremation arrangements.

“We villagers came together, raised the necessary funds and handed the money over to the family. We also actively participated in the cremation process. Hindus and Muslims worked together to ensure that the woman received her last rites,” he said.

The deceased woman’s husband, Shasthi Das, said the support from the Muslim villagers eased the family’s concerns following his wife’s death.

“They come forward in times of trouble, so I didn’t have to worry about the funeral after my wife’s death,” he said.

Villagers Highlight Community Ties

The incident has highlighted the close social ties that residents say exist between Hindu and Muslim families in Masurdanga.

Residents said villagers routinely come together during times of hardship regardless of religious identity.

Nazmul Haque, pradhan of the local panchayat, said such support was not unusual in the village.

“There are precedents for this kind of support,” Haque said.
