The Uttar Pradesh police have arrested Bhanu Kumar and Alok Ambedkar, activists of the All India Students’ Association (AISA) at Allahabad University, for organizing a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Bhanu, Alok, and other students of Allahabad University organized a protest outside the university on 13th March following the central government’s notification of the rules related to the controversial CAA.

AISA leaders have alleged that the Uttar Pradesh police are not cooperating with them and have not yet provided them with a copy of the First Information Report (FIR).

The AISA leaders also claim that a police source informed them that Bhanu and Alok have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Section 107 (Abetment of a thing), 116 (Abetment of offence punishable with imprisonment), and 151 (Knowingly joining or continuing in assembly of five or more persons after it has been commanded to disperse).

Allegedly, while the UP Police was arresting activists in Allahabad, in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, the same police force is reportedly on the lookout for student activists at Lucknow University who protested against the CAA.

On Monday, the Ministry of Home Affairs Monday notified the rules for implementation of the CAA, which was enacted by Parliament in December 2019 and spawned protests across the country.
