The external affairs ministry has announced that the government of Gujarat has taken strict action against the perpetrators involved in a violent incident at Gujarat University in Ahmedabad on Saturday.
In a statement, the ministry mentioned that it is in contact with the Gujarat government regarding the matter. Out of the two foreign students injured in the clash, one has been discharged from the hospital after receiving medical treatment. The Ahmedabad Police has arrested two individuals accused of attacking international students, as reported by India Today.
According to Ahmedabad Commissioner of Police GS Malik, the incident occurred around 10:30 pm on Saturday when a group of students was offering Namaz. A group of 20-25 people approached them and demanded to know why they were offering Namaz inside the hostel, instructing them to pray in the mosque instead.
The incident has sparked a debate on social media, with conflicting claims and counterclaims. While some allege that a group of outsiders harassed international students offering Tarawih prayers during Ramadan, others argue that tensions escalated after one of the students struck a person who questioned their prayer location.
Videos circulating on social media purportedly support both sides of the argument. Reports indicate that Afghan, Uzbek, and African students were among those attacked.
An FIR has been filed against the 20-25 individuals involved in the incident, and the law enforcement situation is now under control, as confirmed by Ahmedabad Commissioner of Police GS Malik. Approximately 300 foreign students study at Gujarat University, with around 75 residing in A Block hostel. Two students from Sri Lanka and Tajikistan are currently hospitalized. Police have taken swift action, and further measures will be taken against those responsible for the violence.
