Communist Party of India leader Sitaram Yechury passed away on Thursday (September 12, 2024), after prolonged illness.
As per media reports, the veteran leader died at 3. 05 pm.
Yechury was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, on August 19 for the treatment of a pneumonia-like chest infection and remained in critical condition, according to sources.
He served as a Rajya Sabha MP for 12 years, from 2005 to 2017. The leader, who started from the student’s union of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) as a member of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and went on to become a member of the Central Committee of the CPI(M) in 1984, got elected to the Politburo in 1992.
He became the fifth general secretary of the CPI(M) at the 21st party congress in Visakhapatnam on April 19, 2015. He also played a significant role in the joint opposition’s INDIA bloc.
He has been active on social media till August 29, despite his health conditions.
BJP leaders and Union Ministers condoled the passing of Sitaram Yechury and said his contributions to public life would always be remembered.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal said Yechury gave his entire life for the country.
“The demise of Sitaram Yechury is extremely saddening. He was an MP when I came to Rajya Sabha. He was a very calm person. He gave his entire life for the country. Even when our ideologies were different, we were friends,” the BJP leader said.
“I have learnt a lot from him and he will always be alive in our hearts. I pray to god to give strength to his family at this very difficult time,” he added.
Extending his deepest condolences to Yechury’s family, colleagues and admirers, Union minister Kiren Rijiju said in a post on X, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic demise of veteran CPM leader, Sitaram Yechury ji. We had many years of working relations in the Parliament.”
