Dalit Man’s Funeral Interrupted in Muzaffarnagar by Village Head; Caste-Based Atrocities Case Filed

A village head and three others have been booked by the Khatoli Police in Muzaffarnagar district for allegedly obstructing the funeral of a Dalit man and making casteist remarks. The incident took place in Bhensi village on November 9, when a man named Baburam, a Dalit, passed away.

According to the complaint filed by Sonia, a woman from the village, as the body of the deceased was being carried to the crematorium, a group led by village head Amit Ahlavat obstructed the procession and made derogatory remarks targeting the Dalit community. The group allegedly harassed the mourners and attempted to prevent the last rites from being performed.

Circle Officer Ramashish Yadav confirmed the incident, stating that the police intervened promptly to ensure that the funeral proceeded smoothly. The cremation of Baburam was completed on the same day, November 9.

A case has been registered against the accused under various sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, including provisions related to caste-based discrimination and atrocities. The police are continuing their investigation into the matter.
