Since the release of Sabarmati Report on November 15, 2024, actor Vikrant Massey has found himself at the center of media discussions regarding his comments.

Based on the 2002 Godhra train incident, the film Sabarmati Report seeks to explore lesser-known facts surrounding one of India’s most controversial incidents. However, Massey’s remarks during promotional events, coupled with the politically charged theme of the film, have sparked significant criticism.

In an interview with Shubhankar Mishra on his show Unplugged, Massey acknowledged that he had previously been a critic of the BJP but revealed that his political views had evolved. “Jo chiz mujhe buri lagti thi, wo actually buri hain nahi. Log kehte hain musalman khatre mein hai, koi khatare mein nahi hai, sab sahi chal raha hai. Toh isliye aaj main keh raha hoon ki, I have changed over the last time,” he said.

His comments ignited a backlash on social media, with critics accusing him of downplaying communal issues. Some labeled him an “opportunist,” while others called for a boycott of the film, alleging bias.

Amid the backlash, Massey reported receiving death threats but remained committed to promoting the film’s message of secularism. Although there were rumors of potential censorship, Massey clarified in an interview with India Today that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had not recommended any cuts to the movie. “The originality of the film remains intact,” he said.

While the film’s trailer attracted attention for Massey’s compelling performance, early reviews indicate that the story-line lacks clarity. Critics praised Massey’s dedication but described the plot as confusing, calling it “outright propaganda.”

A film review published in Latestly noted, “There are the main aspects where the film falters. While the disclaimer clearly states that the movie is based on the findings of the Nanavati report, it seems to try too hard to take the opposition’s view and crush it. Does it remain unbiased in its ‘report,’ or does it push a particular narrative too aggressively?” This is a question for audience to decide.

As part of the film’s promotional campaign, Massey visited the Godhra train station, expressing his desire to connect with the location and understand the gravity of the incident. His move received both praise and condemnation as a mere publicity stunt.

Sabarmati Report saw theatrical release on November 15, 2024, amid the heated controversy. Whether the film will succeed in its mission to uncover the truth or will be dismissed as propaganda remains to be seen?
