Comedian Munawar Faruqui is once again facing legal trouble after Advocate Amita Sachdeva filed a complaint against him for his alleged remarks on his streaming show, ‘Hafta Wasooli,’ aired on JioHotstar.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on February 22, 2025, Sachdeva described Faruqui as a “habitual offender” and accused him of insulting multiple religions, promoting vulgarity, and polluting young minds through his content.

She wrote: “I have officially filed a complaint against habitual offender Munawar Faruqui for his show ‘Hafta Wasooli’ streamed on @JioHotstar, requesting an FIR under BNS Sections 196, 299, and 353, along with the IT Act and other relevant sections for promoting vulgarity, insulting multiple religions, violating cultural values, and polluting young minds & society.”

Sachdeva added that the complaint was sent via email and would be physically submitted and speed-posted by Monday. She also warned that if no action is taken, she will approach the court.

This isn’t Munawar Faruqui’s first legal controversy. In January 2021, he was arrested during a stand-up performance in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The arrest followed accusations by Eklavya Singh Gaur, son of BJP MLA Malini Gaur, who claimed that Faruqui made malicious jokes about Hindu deities and Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister. Despite no evidence supporting the claims, Madhya Pradesh Police detained him under India’s hate speech laws. His arrest sparked widespread criticism over free speech and the increasing crackdown on comedians.

The complaint against Munawar Faruqui comes amid increasing scrutiny of comedians and independent creators in India’s digital space, following a similar uproar over Samay Raina’s show ‘India’s Got Latent.’
