Afghanistan’s Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, Mawlawi Attaullah Omari, has praised India for its warm hospitality during his first official visit, saying that the people of Afghanistan feel closely connected to India and that “our DNA is one.”
Omari made the remarks while addressing the India-Afghanistan Trade Opportunities Industry Interactive Session organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) under the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
‘It Feels Like I Am Among My Own People’
Thanking the Indian government for the reception he received, Omari said his visit had left a strong impression on him.
“This is my first trip to India. From the very first day I landed in India, I received a warm welcome from the Indian government, the Minister of External Affairs, and everyone I met,” he said.
“It feels as if I am among my own people. It feels like our own country, and as you mentioned, our DNA is one,” Omari added.
Afghanistan Looking for International Cooperation
The Afghan minister said his government is seeking greater international cooperation to strengthen the country’s economy and modernise key sectors.
He said the welcome extended by India has given hope to the people of Afghanistan.
“This warm welcome which we received is like hope for the people of Afghanistan and their betterment,” Omari said.
Highlighting the importance of agriculture in Afghanistan’s economy, he added, “Around 80 per cent of our population is involved in livestock, agriculture and irrigation. Now is the time to modernise these sectors with new technology.”
India and Afghanistan Review Bilateral Ties
Omari’s visit comes as India and Afghanistan continue efforts to strengthen bilateral engagement despite changing regional dynamics.
Earlier this week, officials from both countries held the fourth round of the India-Afghanistan Joint Committee Meeting in New Delhi.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, discussions covered cooperation in humanitarian assistance, development partnership, food security, healthcare, education, sports, capacity building and trade.
Remarks Come Amid Regional Tensions
Omari’s comments also come at a time of strained relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan. His emphasis on historical and cultural ties with India is being seen as a signal of Kabul’s interest in expanding economic and strategic cooperation with New Delhi.
