Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital in Delhi on Wednesday evening to meet those injured in the recent Red Fort blast, shortly after returning from his two-day visit to Bhutan.
Upon landing in Delhi, the Prime Minister drove straight to the hospital, where he interacted with the injured victims, enquired about their health, and wished them a speedy recovery. Senior officials and doctors briefed him about the patients’ condition and the treatment being provided.
The blast, which occurred on Monday evening near the Lal Quila Metro Station, killed at least eight people when a Hyundai i20 car exploded. Initial post-mortem reports have revealed that the victims suffered severe injuries, including multiple fractures and head trauma. Experts said the blast caused lung and ear damage, ruptured intestines, and deep wounds, suggesting that the explosion was extremely powerful.
“The injuries indicate that the victims were thrown against nearby walls or the ground due to the force of the explosion,” a source said. Forensic experts noted that no splinter traces were found on the bodies or clothing, and the exact type of explosive will be confirmed after laboratory analysis.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) collected DNA samples from the mother of the suspected suicide bomber, Dr. Umar Un Nabi, who was allegedly driving the i20 car at the time of the blast.
Meanwhile, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has set up a dedicated team to probe the explosion. The investigation team, headed by senior officers of the rank of Superintendent of Police and above, will conduct a coordinated and detailed probe into the case.
The move follows the Ministry of Home Affairs’ decision to formally hand over the investigation to the NIA, citing evidence of a terror angle. Prime Minister Modi is also expected to chair a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting to discuss the developments surrounding the Delhi blast.
