A historic Mughal-era monument, Mubarak Manzil, also known as Aurangzeb’s Haveli, has been largely demolished in Agra, just months after the state archaeological department issued a notification to protect it. According to local residents, over 100 tractor-loads of debris were removed from the site after the demolition, which they claim was carried out by a builder in collusion with local officials.
Mubarak Manzil, built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, holds significant historical value. It served as a residence for important Mughal figures such as Shah Jahan, Shuja, and Aurangzeb himself. The structure was later modified under British rule, becoming a customs house and salt office, and by 1902, it was known as Tara Niwas. A plaque at the site indicated that Aurangzeb commissioned its construction following his victory at the Battle of Samugarh.
The state archaeological department had issued a notification in September, inviting objections to the proposed protection of the site, but no objections were raised. Just two weeks ago, officials from Lucknow visited the site to start preservation efforts. However, shortly after their visit, the demolition began, leaving the monument in ruins.
Locals have alleged that a builder, in collusion with the police and administrative officials, carried out the demolition despite objections. A local resident, Kapil Vajpayee, expressed frustration, saying, “I filed several complaints with the authorities, but no action was taken. So far, 70% of the structure has been destroyed.”
Agra District Magistrate Aravind Mallappa Bangari confirmed that the authorities were aware of the situation and have initiated an investigation. He said, “We have taken cognizance of the matter. The Archaeological Survey of India and the Revenue Department have been directed to conduct a probe. The sub-divisional magistrate has been asked to visit the site and present a report. Meanwhile, no further changes will be allowed at the site.”
