Ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, Antar Rashtriya Hindu Parishad leader Dr Pravin Togadia on January 29 called for strong action against what he described as illegal immigration from Bangladesh, urging the state government to act quickly and decisively.

Speaking to the media after attending a workers’ conference organized by the Antar Rashtriya Hindu Parishad and Rashtriya Bajrang Dal in Bongaigaon, Dr Togadia focused on the issue of alleged illegal Bangladeshi immigrants living in Assam.

Addressing Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, he demanded DNA tests on what he claimed were 50 lakh illegal Bangladeshis in the state and called for their deportation to Dhaka before the Assembly elections. He invoked Assam’s history, comparing the situation to Ahom general Lachit Borphukan’s resistance against the Mughals, and urged similar decisive measures to “drive out” illegal immigrants.

Dr Togadia also linked the matter to voter verification, claiming that if the alleged illegal immigrants were removed, there would be no need for the Special Revision of electoral rolls in Assam. He warned that any delay in action could worsen the situation.
