AIMIM Bihar state president and MLA Akhtarul Iman has urged the central government to ensure separate reservation for Muslim and Dalit women while amending the Women’s Reservation Act. He said that without a specific quota, women from minority and marginalised communities may continue to remain underrepresented in legislatures.
He said, “There should be a clear share for Muslim and Dalit women so that they are not left behind.” He argued that general women’s reservation alone may not ensure equal participation for all sections of society.
Questions Raised Over Timing of Law Amendment
Iman also questioned the timing of the proposed changes to the law, pointing to the upcoming elections in several states. He said, “At a time when elections are due in several states, bringing this issue now raises questions. It may influence women voters.”
He urged the Election Commission of India to examine whether such announcements during election season are appropriate and fair.
He further alleged that the move could be politically motivated. According to him, “Through this, there is an attempt to attract women voters in five states.”
Criticism of BJP and Bihar Political Situation
The AIMIM leader also targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party, accusing it of focusing on power politics instead of governance. He said, “The BJP wants power at any cost. This politics is affecting governance.”
Referring to Bihar politics, he claimed that the state could face instability after Nitish Kumar steps down as Chief Minister. He said, “Bihar will suffer due to this change. Cabinet meetings have not been held properly for the last two months.”
He also alleged that political developments in the state were being driven by power struggles rather than public interest.
Appeal for Inclusive Representation
Iman reiterated that the women’s reservation law must ensure fair participation of all sections of society. He said reservation should not be limited in a way that excludes minority and Dalit women from meaningful representation.
He said, “If Muslim and Dalit women are not given a separate share, they may not get proper opportunities.”

AIMIM Plans to Contest West Bengal Polls
On AIMIM’s political strategy in West Bengal, Iman said the party may not be in a position to form the government but will contest elections to raise public issues.
He said, “We want to raise the voice of the people inside the Assembly and question decisions that go against them.”
